The Biodiversity and Environmental Research Center (BERC) is proud to announce the publication of a groundbreaking research article titled “IUCN Red List Assessment of the Flora of the State of Palestine (West Bank): Towards a National Strategy for Plant Biodiversity Conservation.”
This study, conducted by BERC researchers, represents the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of wild plant species in the West Bank using the globally recognized IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. The assessment provides critical insights into the distribution, extinction risk, and conservation needs of Palestine’s native flora.
The results reveal that a significant proportion of the assessed species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, overgrazing, urban expansion, and climate change. The findings highlight the urgent need to develop and implement a national strategy for plant biodiversity conservation in Palestine.
The publication marks an important step towards strengthening conservation policy and action in the region, providing a scientific foundation for future environmental planning, habitat protection, and sustainable development.
BERC extends its gratitude to all partners, experts, and institutions who contributed to this milestone effort.
