The Biodiversity and Environmental Research Center (BERC) is delighted to announce the publication of its latest research article in the internationally acclaimed journal Biodiversitas Journal of Biological Diversity
Titled "Enhancing ecosystem representation in Palestine through strategic recommendations for an effective protected areas network," the study rigorously evaluates Palestine's existing protected areas network. Utilizing systematic conservation planning and advanced GIS tools, the researchers identify critical gaps in the representation of ecosystems and vegetation types. They highlight that while some areas, such as Desert Salines and Desert Vegetation, exceed global conservation targets, many vital ecosystems, including Evergreen Mediterranean Maquis, Park Forest, and Maquis and Forest, remain significantly underrepresented.
The authors, Mohammed Saleem Ali-Shtayeh, Salam Yousef Abu-Zaitoun, and Rana Majed Jamous, offer strategic recommendations for addressing these gaps. Key proposals include expanding the network of protected areas to achieve equitable ecosystem representation, establishing micro-reserves for unique habitats and threatened plant species, and enhancing collaborative governance to promote inclusive and sustainable ecosystem management.
